About
PoundTally is a take-home pay calculator for the UK, built to show an honest gross-to-net breakdown — including the parts other calculators get wrong, like the Personal Allowance taper and the difference between the three pension relief methods. Every figure used in the calculation is taken from a named primary source.

What PoundTally is
PoundTally is a take-home pay calculator for the UK. It turns a gross salary into the number that actually lands in your account — after PAYE income tax, Class 1 National Insurance, any student-loan repayment and your workplace pension — and handles the parts other calculators get wrong: the Personal Allowance taper above £100,000 (the 60% band), the separate Scottish scale, and the difference between the three pension relief methods. Employer National Insurance is shown where it belongs: on top of your wage, never a deduction from it.
How the figures are sourced
Every rate and threshold comes from a single, provenance-tracked payload — the income-tax bands, the Personal Allowance and its taper, the Scottish scale, National Insurance thresholds, and the student-loan plans — each traced to its primary source at gov.uk, gov.scot or the ONS. Nothing is hand-typed into the pages; the prose reads the numbers from the payload so it can never drift from them.

The review gate
Every figure is traced to a primary source before it ships, and the calculator is for a ballpark only — it cannot know your tax code or your circumstances, so it is not for tax, financial or legal decisions. The principle behind the whole project is simple: a calculator should never quietly decide a rate is right. A number is either traced to a primary source or it doesn’t ship.
An estimate, not tax advice
PoundTally gives you a clear, honest estimate — not personal tax advice. It models the standard case for a UK resident on PAYE for tax year 2026/27: the income-tax scale (rest of UK or Scotland), the Personal Allowance and its taper, Class 1 employee National Insurance, student-loan repayments and a workplace pension. It does not know your full circumstances, and some things are deliberately out of scope in this version — bespoke tax codes beyond the standard, benefits in kind, and other allowances. National Insurance is legally worked out per pay period, so a real payslip on uneven pay can differ. For a decision that matters, check gov.uk or speak to an accountant.
